MY SISTER’s mission is to prevent sex trafficking, educate communities, empower the population, provide aftercare for survivors, and offer growth opportunities to at-risk youth and women through the sales of our statement-making, ethically-sourced apparel and accessories.
This is our “official” mission statement. But what does it mean? Many companies offer seemingly blanket mission statements that leave customers confused and questioning where true intentions lie. At MY SISTER, we want you to be confident that your purchases are going toward a great cause. Let’s break down our mission statement for you:
PREVENT SEX TRAFFICKING: MY SISTER is a Specific Benefit Corporation that donates 10% of net proceeds to our nonprofit partner, MN Girls Are Not For Sale. By providing this funding, we are supporting programs that work to identify at-risk youth and women, and prevent situations that can lead to trafficking. In addition, we partner with other nonprofits such as Breaking Free and The Link, that also help with preventative services and aftercare.
EDUCATE COMMUNITIES: MY SISTER shares the latest research and statistics from our nonprofit partners and leading industry experts like Polaris Project across our social channels and through blog posts. Stay up to date here.
EMPOWER THE POPULATION: Empowerment is a critical part of the aftercare process for survivors, and we believe that creating jobs is one way we can help empower (see more below). Additionally, we believe in empowering our local, national, and international communities with positive messages of self-love and independence, as well as serve as a resource to educate people on how they can make an impact through involvement.
PROVIDE AFTERCARE FOR SURVIVORS & OFFER GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES: MY SISTER works to provide employment opportunities for survivors wherever we can. For example, we hired a survivor to sew our MY SISTER x Ashley Mary Collaboration Hankies, and we hired a group of survivors to write empowering, inspiring messages on our product tags. Learn more about why we feel that creating jobs is so important, here.
STATEMENT-MAKING APPAREL: Our apparel items feature bold statements that are meant to start conversations surrounding sex trafficking. Our shoppers often reach out to us saying that they get stopped on the street by complete strangers wanting to learn more about what their shirt is all about--and we love it!
ETHICAL SOURCING: Ethical sourcing is extremely important to us, because sweatshops have ties to labor and sex trafficking. We ensure that all of the products we sell are exploitation-free. Learn more about our sourcing process here.
